Chapter Eighteen
“Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.”
Isaiah 44:8
1462 B.C.: The Shoreline of the Red Sea
Moses could taste the salt in the air. He stood elevated above all the refugees of the seed of Abraham. He had the rod of God in his hand and a lump in his throat the size of the Red Sea which lay behind him. He could see the dust cloud of Pharaoh and his chariots drawing near at an extremely uncomfortable rate. Panic was growing within the multitude and things were moving faster than Moses’ senses would allow.
What Moses couldn’t see was the Prince of Israel, Michael the Archangel, standing no less than five feet above him. Behind Michael was an angelic legion clad in golden armor. They stood with swords outstretched, ready to defend the people of God. Ra and Horus, Nut and Hathor, Isis, Sunu, Apis and all of the other supernatural princes of Egypt had been offended by the plagues and their armies rolled like a flood over the desert wasteland.
The heavens rumbled as the pillar of smoke and darkness appeared once again to block the path of the enemy. At night this cloud barricaded the Egyptians as an impenetrable wall of fire.
Shouts were heard among the people. “We can’t stay here forever, Moses! They’re going to figure out a way around the cloud sooner or later and then we’re done for!”
The people were losing hope and continued complaining. “Did you bring us all the way out here just to have us killed? Maybe if we just surrender, they’ll let us return?”
Moses cried out to the people and down deep he was hoping that God would hear him too. “Fear ye not, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD! God will fight for you and ye shall hold your peace.”
The chariots had begun to come around both sides of the cloud and were closing in. Pharoah’s rash anger had given him the courage to bet his life that the dark cloud wasn’t lethal, and it looked as if he were right.
Moses wasn’t panicking, he was praying. The LORD spoke to his heart, “Why are you talking to me when you know what to do? Just tell the people to walk into the sea and divide it with your rod.”
Moses hesitated to respond just long enough for him to hear the LORD joke, “You did bring your rod, right?”
Moses’ rod. He had certainly learned by now not to leave that behind. Even though it was just another piece of wood on the outside, God kept using it in mysterious ways. This was the same rod that brought down darkness, thunder, hail and fire on Egypt; not to mention it was still full from having eaten Pharoah’s pets. But this was the main event; and with the powers of darkness poised to annihilate the people of God there was no better moment than now.
